Found this interesting book on the Internet, so bought a copy off eBay for $24. Some cool images and recipes, some of which I'll share below. 








And, of course, being an Australian book and author, I have to say a few words about Vegenite.



Never even heard of this stuff until Men at Work mentioned it in their song, "Down Under." Next, I heard it while on a cruise to Australia, where many Aussies were on board, and Royal Caribbean felt compelled to offer Vegemite to their guests in little packets similar to what jelly and jams come in:

Aussies even make a sandwich out of this vile, salty stuff by spreading it on bread, the proverbial "Vegemite sandwich" mentioned in the Men at Work song.

Pete and Mabel's Trip to the 1939 World's Fair and Beyond

 By Bruce Shawkey My grandparents traveled by auto to the 1939 World's Fair in New York. It must have quite a journey on so many levels. To my knowledge, they never ventured very far from their home in Lodi, Wis. Also, consider there were no Interstate Highways in those days, just two-lane roads. I wondered if they even had a road map, or just went "east," following Grandpa's innate sense of direction. I don't know what car they drove; presumably there was 27,875 miles on the odometer. They took someone with them named Ella, who I assume was Ella Marfelius, who my grandparents mentioned several times, but I never met, at least to my knowledge. In any event, here is the log/journal that Mabel kept of their journey (with annotations in italics). "Left Lodi 7 a.m. 27,875 ( miles on odometer ), August 20, 1939. Ate dinner at LaGrange, Ill. Life Lessons Often Learned Too Late

By Bruce Shawkey Ran across this thought-provoking article on the Bored Panda website about life lessons often learned too late.  Be careful of who you vent to at work. Just because they listen or show some empathy, it doesn't mean that they're your friend or have your best interests at heart. OK, I'm retired, so this really doesn't apply to me at this juncture of my life. But I get it. Many is the time I've vented to a co-worker, and it's come back to bite me in the ass. Working harder than everyone else only means the boss will load you down with even more work. Again, I'm retired, but I can related as a former salaried employee. As the one with no kids, I was the one who was always asked (and expected) to stay late to meet a deadline (or whatever) while the co-workers with kids got to go home on time or even early. HR ain't your friend. Boy, ain't it the truth. They're looking out for the company, not you. People care much less about you than ...
