The Single-Speed Osterizer Blender
By Bruce Shawkey
Anybody remember the single-speed Osterizer blender? We had one in our house growing up. Dad painted the base unit pink and used it to make cocktails. Now, blenders have variable speeds and the pitcher is made from high impact plastic, like my Vita-mix.
The appliance was revolutionary for its time, as explained in this 1949 owners' manual. The trademarked name became a verb, as to "Osterize" solid meat to make baby food. The blender cost around $30, equivalent to about $400 in today's money.
