Much more, of course, has been written about him, some good, some not so good. This 182-page biography is universally positive, and doesn't get into his wars with George Westinghouse over AC/DC, his taking credit for inventions from others in his workshops, etc. He is fairly revered in Fort Myers, Fla., where he spent many winters in his later years due to rheumatism and various other ailments. 


He was born February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio, and died: October 18, 1931 (age 84 years), in West Orange, NJ, site of his Menlo Park laboratory. He is immortalized in a postage stamp issued as part of the "Famous Americans" series in 1947. 

He is further immortalized as the hero of Doctor Emmett Brown (played by Christopher Lloyd) in the movie "Back to the Future."






The uses of the incandescent light are legion. Besides those which are of common observation it is used for lighting the interior of mines, caves, and the dark apartments of ships, and does not foul the air. It is also used by divers in submarine operations ; in the formation of advertising signs, and in pyrotechnics, but perhaps one of the most extraordinary uses to which it has been put is in exploring the interior of the human stomach and other cavities of the body.

 By Bruce Shawkey Time for another Costco run. This time to the Costco outside Verona. First off, lunch in the food court.  Quarter pound hot dog and a Pepsi for $1.50. Cheapest lunch around. The Costco hot dog was introduced in 1984, one year after Costco's opened in 1983. The original hot dog was made by Hebrew National, and was sold at a hot dog cart outside a Costco location in San Diego. Life Lessons Often Learned Too Late

By Bruce Shawkey Ran across this thought-provoking article on the Bored Panda website about life lessons often learned too late.  Be careful of who you vent to at work. Just because they listen or show some empathy, it doesn't mean that they're your friend or have your best interests at heart. OK, I'm retired, so this really doesn't apply to me at this juncture of my life. But I get it. Many is the time I've vented to a co-worker, and it's come back to bite me in the ass. Working harder than everyone else only means the boss will load you down with even more work. Again, I'm retired, but I can related as a former salaried employee. As the one with no kids, I was the one who was always asked (and expected) to stay late to meet a deadline (or whatever) while the co-workers with kids got to go home on time or even early.
