Apparantly, Men DO Make Passes ...

... at Girls Who Wear  Glasses

"Men don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" is a famous saying, often attributed to the writer Dorothy Parker, plays on societal attitudes and stereotypes about attractiveness and eyewear.

But this article I found in a back issue of Europa Star magazine seems to contradict this saying. While this article is not about watches, per se, jewelry stores once upon a time, carried eye glasses.

CONTACT LENS THREAT STARTS NEW SPECTACLE FASHION

Manufacturers of spectacle mountings are increasingly aware of the fact that frameless contact-lens glasses may seriously jeopardize the future of their business if -- as and when such contact lenses are made available at reasonable prices.

This fear has resulted in a strikingly successful new fashion line for ladies' glasses, which has been launched in all countries. The world was surprised, in fact, by those "Butterfly "-shaped mountings that suddenly transformed the age-old handicap of wearing glasses into another cunning device for women to add a note of attractiveness to many a plain face.

EYE-GLAMOUR

Women who must wear spectacles constantly have now wonderful opportunities for smart combinations, as the modern tendency is to consider them as an elegant and decorative ornament which should be chosen with such care as handbags. gloves or shoes.

A new and exciting innovation is a very reasonable priced basic frame to which can be clipped mountings of any color, so that the spectacles and dresses can be assorted. It is even possible to buy replacements for diamond clips to be used when spectacles must be worn with an evening dress. The color of the frame can be made not only to match the outfit, but even the lipstick and nail lacquer. Some frames are inset at both sides with jewels in harmony with earrings, earclips or clips worn on dresses, thus adding to the jewel effect of glamour.

The ornamental value of spectacle frames is becoming more and more important so that famous “haute-couture” stylists do not hesitate to show models wearing spectacle perfectly matching their dresses.

Also, dark glasses are brought into this fashion; they are designed with much fantasy in order to enhance racing outfits or summer dresses. Spectacles of this kind permit the widest range of clip-on fancies, as the eyes are screened; but it is necessary to be very careful in choosing the shape of dark glasses because -- if too large -- they can ruin the nicest face and the most charming smile.

Instead of being an impersonal item, detrimental to beauty, as they used to be, modern spectacles can be carefully selected; they match not only dresses. but even individual characteristics. Modern spectacles are now designed by artists, such as Mrs. May Clark, in London. who works for an optician and develops a special style or model to suit each face. Many women among the smartest of the world have now become aware of the fact that their personality or charm is largely due to such " spectacular" glasses.
